Eva is a young woman who studies as an apprentice in the temple of Thoth in Hermopolis, Ancient Egypt, in 321 BC. She's studying dark magic under her mentor Remmao, together with her friends Dia and Ramesses—Remmao's brother. Those who study dark magic are called shesmu. They have the power to step into other people's dreams and interact with the dead. In order to conceal their identity, as dark magic is prohibited by the pharaoh, shesmu wear a cloak and a black tablet that transforms into a mask. Eva's full name is Evthys which means "giver of life," while her mother, Hathorut, called her Nepthys which meant "bringer of death." Eva had a troubled childhood, and when she ran away from home she was taken in by Isman's family. Isman became her closest friend and like a brother to her, and they grew up together. To help Isman's family make money, she would paint and sell pots at a local market. This is where she was discovered by Remmao and became an apprentice. Isman also began studying at the same temple, but as a healer. During her apprenticeship, she and the others were volunteered to join a group of hunters in Thebes to try and determine the origin of a deadly disease.
